Director of the Department of Neuropathology

Professor Manuela Neumann is Professor of Neuropathology and Director of the Department of Neuropathology at the University of Tübingen, which also hosts the BrainBank of the University Hospital of Tübingen. She was trained as neuropathologist in Göttingen and Munich, and was Assistant Professor for Experimental Neuropathology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, before being recruited to Tübingen in 2012. She is an internationally recognised expert on the molecular neuropathology of neurodegenerative diseases, such as frontotemporal dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as well as Parkinson’s disease. She has long standing experience in setting up and running a brain bank as well as in the diagnostics of neurodegenerative diseases as exemplified by her previous activities as scientific coordinator of a BMBF funded German BrainBank Network (BrainNet) and the German Reference Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases” of the German society for Neuropathology and Neuroanatomy from 2000-2008. Her main research focus is to unravel the molecular pathology and pathomechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases by studying human tissues and generating and analyzing new transgenic mouse models.
