The Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research (HIH) and the Department of Neurology of the University Hospital Tübingen constitutes the Centre of Neurology in Tübingen. The HIH is one of the largest centres for disease-oriented neuroscientific research in Germany, consisting of 21 research groups. Research interests range from basic molecular mechanisms of neuronal function and dysfunction to clinical studies. A major focus of several groups is on neurodegenerative disorders, in particular Parkinson’s disease, but also the rarer neurodegenerative disorders including frontotemporal dementias, motorneuron diseases, ataxias and spastic paraplegias. The Centre of Neurology in Tübingen stands out for its close link between basic and clinical research on the one hand and top level patient care on the other. In all departments, clinicians and researchers work closely together, thus providing an ideal platform to translate research findings into clinical applications. This structure provides opportunities for studying disease mechanisms in molecularly defined patient and at- risk cohorts, to benefit from possibilities of biobanking and to rapidly enrol patients in proof- of- concept trials.
